Russian fighter jet violated Estonia's airspace
A Russian SU-30 fighter jet entered Estonia's airspace unauthorized for approximately one minute, prompting NATO's Baltic air policing mission to respond.
On Wednesday afternoon, a Russian SU-30 fighter jet entered Estonia's airspace near Vaindloo Island without permission, remaining in Estonian airspace for about one minute. The incident has raised concerns as it marks the first instance this year where a Russian aircraft has breached Estonia's airspace, signaling a potential escalation in tensions between the two nations. The unauthorized entry did not include a flight plan, and the aircraft failed to communicate with Estonian air traffic control on a two-way radio.
In response, an Italian Air Force unit deployed as part of NATO's Baltic air policing mission based in Γmari launched an identification flight as part of standard protocol for such violations. Estonia's defense forces confirmed the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of national airspace in light of geopolitical tensions in the region.
Following the violation, Estonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the charge d'affaires from the Russian embassy in Estonia on Thursday, delivering a formal note of protest. This diplomatic action underscores Estonia's commitment to addressing breaches of sovereignty and maintaining regional security, while also reflecting the heightened vigilance of NATO's presence in the Baltic states amid ongoing concerns regarding Russian military operations.
