Ukrainian mercenary activity in India ‘very disturbing’ – ex-general

A former paramilitary general expressed concerns about Ukrainian mercenaries operating in India following the arrest of seven individuals in connection with alleged insurgency training.

Concerns have emerged regarding Ukrainian mercenary activity in India, described as 'very disturbing' by retired Lt. Gen. Shokin Chauhan, a former director general of the Assam Rifles. This statement follows recent arrests made by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), which detained seven individuals, including six Ukrainians and a US citizen, for allegedly training and providing weaponry to insurgents in Myanmar. The operation, which involved crossing the border from Myanmar into India’s Mizoram state, raises significant alarm, particularly given the region’s ongoing challenges with insurgency and illegal cross-border movements.

Lt. Gen. Chauhan highlighted the issue of weak military presence on the India-Myanmar border, which allows for easier movement of individuals between the two countries. The arrested individuals planned to support insurgent groups operating in Myanmar, thereby complicating regional security dynamics. Furthermore, the Ukrainian Embassy has requested the release of its nationals, yet officials in India are adamant about their detention, citing illegal entry as a primary reason for their refusal to comply with the embassy's request.

This incident not only raises concerns about the implications for India's internal security but also points to broader regional instability. The involvement of foreign mercenaries could exacerbate existing tensions in northeastern India, particularly in the context of ongoing insurgency issues. As foreign influence in conflict zones increases, the Indian government is likely to face growing pressure to enhance security measures along its borders to prevent such activities in the future.
