SM Week 2026 in Umeå - Follow Everything That Happens
The SM Week events in Umeå for 2026 face challenges due to a lack of snow, leading to the cancellation of certain competitions.
The upcoming SM Week in Umeå for 2026 has been impacted by a significant lack of snow, causing the cancellation of the Släde 4-spann masstart event in drag dog sports. This decision was made as the competition was set to be held at Mariehemsängarna, which currently has virtually no snow cover. Liselott Gustafsson, the chairperson of Umeå Drag Dog Club, expressed disappointment, stating, "We were really looking forward to showcasing this exciting event, but it is very unfortunate that there is no snow."
Other drag dog events are still on track and will take place at Stadsliden, where artificial snow can be utilized. However, the specific Släde 4-spann event, where four dogs pull a sled, cannot be conducted there due to the terrain being too hilly. In response to ongoing challenges within the region's sports environment, Umeå Municipality has allocated 400,000 Swedish kronor to attract and retain elite athletes. Yet, concerns remain among local athletes about Umeå's reputation as a hub for serious skiing, with some, like elite sports student Saga Nilsson, suggesting that it is better known for its educational opportunities rather than a serious sports destination.
