Colombia: Baby grey titi monkey gets cuddly ‘mum’ ahead of return to wild

A baby grey titi monkey in Colombia is being rehabilitated with the help of a soft toy surrogate before being released back into the wild.

In early March, a baby grey titi monkey was discovered orphaned near Rionegro, Colombia, prompting its rescue and rehabilitation at a specialized wildlife center in Barbosa. To alleviate stress and mimic parental care, staff at the center have introduced a soft toy as a surrogate mother. As of March 18, the infant has been receiving milk formula and is being monitored closely for its health, while also being gradually exposed to other peers within a controlled environment.

The grey titi monkey is an endangered species native to Colombia, and its population is currently threatened by factors such as deforestation and illegal hunting and trade. Rehabilitation centers, particularly those located in Antioquia and Caldas, adhere to structured protocols that prioritize the health and welfare of these primates. The intent is to ensure that the young monkey can thrive independently in its natural habitat, with plans to release it into the forests of Magdalena Medio as soon as it demonstrates the ability to forage for itself.

Post-release tracking will be utilized to monitor the monkey’s integration into wild groups, providing valuable data on survival rates and social dynamics among reintroduced individuals. This rehabilitation effort not only highlights the urgent need to protect endangered species but also sheds light on the broader challenges faced by wildlife in Colombia, motivating ongoing conservation efforts.
