More than 25,000 victims of gender violence have been alerted since 2023 that their aggressor was a repeat offender

Over 25,000 victims of gender-based violence in Spain have been warned since 2023 that their assailant has a history of repeat offenses.

Since the beginning of 2023, Spanish authorities have informed more than 25,000 women victims of gender-based violence that their aggressors are repeat offenders. This alarming statistic, compiled by the Ministry of Interior, indicates a significant concern for their safety and the safety of their children, as it highlights the existence of a systematic problem in handling repeat offenders in cases of domestic violence. Authorities assess the risk factors associated with each case to ensure proper alertness and preventive measures are undertaken.

In the last four years, a total of 25,037 women have been warned by various police bodies after evaluations indicated that these women were potentially at higher risk due to the actions of their aggressors. This number represents a sharp increase of 5,378 additional alerts since November 2022. Alongside this, the Ministry has also logged approximately 83,987 offenders who have multiple victims, raising critical questions about how the system can better protect victims and manage such high-risk individuals effectively.

The Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez, prompted the need for this initiative through an official directive in February 2023. The directive mandates police forces to inform women who may be in danger due to the behavior of repeat offenders, aiming to empower them with crucial information regarding their safety. It further indicates a formal recognition of the systemic issues surrounding gender violence in Spain and the commitment to take more decisive action to help protect victims from repeat attacks.
