Bus fare rises to R$ 5 in Parnaíba and cooperative justifies increase in operating costs
The bus fare in Parnaíba, Brazil, has increased to R$ 5 due to rising operational costs, particularly from diesel price hikes.
The city of Parnaíba in Piauí, Brazil, has announced an increase in the urban public transport fare from R$ 3.80 to R$ 5, effective immediately. This decision was published in the Municipal Official Diary on Tuesday, reflecting a justification based on rising operational costs experienced by the transport cooperative responsible for the service. The cooperative highlighted that maintaining previous fare levels was no longer feasible given the substantial increases in fuel prices and costs related to fleet maintenance and other operational inputs.
In a statement by the municipal administration, a technical study provided by the cooperative indicated that various factors, including fuel, tire costs, and maintenance, were impacting the transport system's viability. As a direct result, the cooperative proposed the fare adjustment, which the city approved based on consultations with industry representatives to ensure uninterrupted public transport services for residents. The adjustment is intended to safeguard service continuity amidst increasing financial pressures.
With this fare increment, the complete fare is established at R$ 5, while the half fare remains unchanged, ensuring some level of affordability for essential users. This change aims to balance operational sustainability for the transport service while maintaining adequate access for the public amidst rising economic pressures in the region.
