Symptoms of Cold in His Majesty the Emperor; First Time in Reign that Imperial Court Ceremony is Canceled Due to Poor Health

Emperor of Japan exhibited cold symptoms, resulting in the cancellation of an imperial court ceremony for the first time since his ascension.

The Imperial Household Agency announced on the 19th that Emperor Naruhito is experiencing symptoms of a cold, prompting him to cancel his attendance at the upcoming imperial court ceremonies, specifically the 'Spring Festival of Imperial Ancestors' and 'Spring Festival at the Shrine', scheduled for the 20th. This is the first instance since his ascension to the throne where he must miss these ceremonies due to health issues. According to the agency, the Emperor is displaying a cough but does not have a fever, and has been able to conduct his official duties from his residence, the Imperial Palace, on the afternoon of the 19th.

Furthermore, the Emperor has plans to visit Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures next week, and following consultations with his physician, it was decided that he should prioritize his health. Additionally, Empress Masako is also showing cold-like symptoms and will also abstain from attending the ceremonies, opting instead for a remote viewing from the Imperial Palace. This situation highlights the ongoing health concerns surrounding the Imperial family and emphasizes the importance of health and wellness for public figures under public scrutiny.
