Commence Research Drillings for Tunnels to the Islands

Research drillings for potential tunnels to the Westman Islands will begin next month in Iceland.

Research drilling for the feasibility of constructing tunnels to the Westman Islands is set to begin next month, with drillings taking place both at Eiðið on Heimaey and in Landeyjasandi near the farm Kross. Eyjagöng ehf., a company formed to explore the viability of digging tunnels between the mainland and the islands, has contracted Ræktunarsamband Flóa and Skeiða for core drilling, which is expected to provide essential insights into the geological strata and foundations along the proposed tunnel route. The preparations are slated to fully commence at the beginning of April, with the drilling scheduled to start at the end of the month and expected to conclude by early July, provided that everything proceeds as planned.
