Fiala's government decided on a massive investment in Nymburk. Šťastný has now suspended the project

The Czech government has suspended a significant investment project for the modernization of sports facilities in Nymburk following a reassessment of large projects by the new Minister for Sports, Boris Šťastný.

The Czech government, led by PM Petr Fiala, has announced the suspension of a major investment project aimed at modernizing sports facilities in Nymburk, originally supported by the previous administration. Minister of Sports, Health and Prevention Boris Šťastný disclosed this information during an informal meeting with journalists, stating that large projects will be reassessed and coordinated among the regions. This reassessment aims to create a new national strategy for the next eight to twelve years, reflecting a shift in governmental focus.

The project involved extensive renovations of a 70-year-old sports center in Nymburk that caters to over 30 sports federations. The first phase of the project was approved by the former government, with a grant of 800 million Czech korunas allocated for the years 2026-2028, alongside an additional 150 million from the Czech Sports Union (ČUS). The planned renovations included the construction of new indoor facilities for athletics and racket sports, as well as an indoor training center.

This decision to suspend the project has raised concerns among stakeholders, particularly the ČUS, which operates and owns the center, as they had not received any official notice regarding the suspension at the time of the announcement. The effects of this suspension may hinder planned upgrades and improvements in sports infrastructure in Nymburk, which have been anticipated for several years, impacting regional sports development and potentially limiting opportunities for athletes in preparation for future competitions.
