R. Žemaitaitis: if "Nemuno aušra" lost its subsidy, it would mean nothing
Lithuanian MP R. Žemaitaitis stated that losing state subsidies would not impact the party's funding, as more donations than needed are being raised.
R. Žemaitaitis, a member of the Lithuanian parliament, expressed confidence that the party 'Nemuno aušra' would remain financially self-sufficient despite potential loss of state subsidies. He claimed that an increasing number of supporters are willing to donate to the party, suggesting that the loss would not significantly hinder their operations. On the contrary, he implied that increased scrutiny from the media could lead to even greater support from the public.
This statement comes amid scrutiny from the State Tax Inspectorate regarding the party's financial practices, specifically concerning improper vehicle rental payments to Žemaitaitis and another party leader. Investigators proposed that the party misused state budget allocations, having paid nearly 50,000 euros for rental services in ways that allegedly contravened financial regulations. This complex situation raises serious questions about the transparency and governance of political parties in Lithuania.
The ongoing discussions about funding and legality reflect broader concerns about the integrity of political financing in the country. The decision from the VRK (State Security Commission) to postpone resolving the issue indicates the sensitive nature of the case. It puts 'Nemuno aušra' in a precarious position as allegations of financial improprieties could affect its reputation and operational capabilities, even if the party maintains a positive outlook on fundraising efforts.
