Electricity prices expected to rise before summer; Electric Utility Association President: 'We will promote measures to avoid soaring prices'
Japan's electricity prices are expected to rise before summer, with the head of the Electric Utility Association emphasizing the need for strategies to prevent steep increases due to rising fuel costs hampered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The President of the Electric Utility Association, who is also the head of Kansai Electric Power, expressed concerns regarding the rising electricity rates in Japan, particularly in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In a press conference, he highlighted that measures are being taken to mitigate the impact of soaring fuel prices on electricity costs, yet anticipates that prices may still increase as summer approaches.
Japan relies heavily on imports for its fuel needs, especially liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is essential for thermal power generation. While only about 10% of Japanโs LNG imports come from the Middle East, the prices of LNG are often linked to the fluctuating oil prices. This means that as fuel costs rise due to geopolitical instability, electricity and gas prices are expected to see a delayed increase, impacting consumers in the coming months.
The Electric Utility Association President underscored the importance of diversifying procurement sources and creatively combining types of fuel to mitigate anticipated price increases. Although it is difficult to predict the magnitude of these price hikes, he urged stakeholders to monitor the situation closely and adapt procurement strategies to minimize potential impacts on consumers during this critical time.
