Long Suspension for Controversial Hockey Player
French hockey player Pierre Crinon has received an eight-game suspension following a controversial incident during the Milan Olympic tournament.
Pierre Crinon, a controversial hockey player who gained international attention during the Milan Olympic tournament, has been handed an eight-game suspension after a dangerous play during a match in the French top division. The incident involved Crinon performing a so-called 'leg sweep' to knock down an opponent after the whistle had been blown, for which he should have received a 5+20 minute penalty according to the league's disciplinary guidelines. Following this dangerous maneuver, Crinon further exacerbated the situation by taunting the Briancon bench, showcasing his anger and escalating tensions on the ice.
Prior to Crinon's actions, a severe hit had been delivered by Briancon's player, Sato Kohei, who was subsequently suspended for two games. Crinon, while in a fit of rage, later managed to score a goal that tied the match at 1-1, an ironic twist considering the circumstances surrounding his suspension. The incidents occurred during the second match of a best-of-seven playoff series, which Grenoble is currently leading 3-1.
This is not Crinon's first disciplinary issue this season; he previously received a seven-game suspension for hitting Angers' goalkeeper, Matthew O'Connor, which also led to legal proceedings set for May. As an Olympic-level player, Crinon's behavior raises concerns about sportsmanship and safety in professional hockey, particularly with the upcoming games as the playoffs continue and the league's reputation hangs in the balance.
