Navarsete resigns as county governor
Liv Signe Navarsete has resigned from her position as county governor for Vestland county in Norway, seeking more time for family and other priorities after years of demanding work.
Liv Signe Navarsete has formally announced her resignation from her role as county governor (statsforvalter) of Vestland county, Norway, effective 1st September 2026. Her resignation request has been submitted to the Ministry of Digitalization and Administration, which is responsible for appointing a new governor. Navarsete, who took up the role on September 1, 2022, stated that while she found the position rewarding, it was also quite demanding, and after years of intensive work involving considerable travel across a vast area, she now seeks to dedicate more time to her family and other priorities.
Navarsete's tenure as county governor has been marked by significant responsibilities across a diverse and expansive region, further emphasizing the importance of local governance in addressing the needs of communities. Her prior political experience includes leadership of the Center Party from 2008 to 2014 and serving in various ministerial roles in the governments of Jens Stoltenberg from 2005 to 2013, including Minister of Transport and Communications and Minister of Local Government and Regional Development. This background lent her considerable expertise in administrative and governance matters.
The Ministry of Digitalization and Administration will now take the lead in recruiting a suitable successor for Navarsete's position. Her departure opens up an opportunity for new leadership within the Vestland county administration, which may lead to changes in policies and strategies affecting local governance and regional development. As local governments play a crucial role in the implementation of national policies, this transition could have broader implications for the administration's approach to regional issues.
