Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, has formally requested the BCCI to extend his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup following recent successes.
Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, has made a formal request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup. This request comes on the heels of his successful management through crucial tournaments such as the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, with his contract having already been extended by a year before the IPL 2025 season. Having recently secured the T20 World Cup at home, Agarkar is keen to continue his role and make further contributions to Indian cricket.
Reports from 'Times of India' indicate that preliminary discussions regarding his request have already taken place within the board, although a final decision has yet to be reached. This discussion arises at a critical time when the Indian team is gearing up for significant challenges, including important stages of the World Test Championship, while also preparing strategic plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Agarkar's leadership has coincided with a remarkable period in which the Indian team has claimed three ICC titles, affirming his impact on the team's success.
Since assuming the position of chairman of the men's senior selection committee in June 2023, Agarkar has overseen the Indian teamโs triumphs, including two T20 World Cups and a Champions Trophy, alongside victories in the Asia Cup both in 2023 and 2025. This dominant performance in white-ball cricket, reflected in a record of winning 31 out of 33 matches, underscores his proficiency and authority within cricketing circles, raising expectations and attention regarding his appeal for an extended tenure.
