Yle plans to give up its set design studio

Yle is planning to outsource its set design operations to an external provider, affecting 13 employees and various equipment.

Yle, Finland's national public broadcasting company, announced plans to shift its set design services to an external contractor as part of a business transfer. The decision was made by Yle's board during a meeting on March 16. This transfer means that the employment of affected workers will also change hands, leading to potential job and contractual implications for the involved employees.

The set design operations impacted by this decision are located in both Tampere and Helsinki, and the transfer involves not only 13 employees but also significant assets including equipment and facilities. The board plans to select the new partner through an open competition, which is expected to commence in March or April. The transition is slated for completion by the end of 2026, indicating a strategic shift in how Yle manages its production needs.

The announcement has prompted a response from Yle's program staff, represented by the union YOT, which believes that the situation is unreasonable for the affected employees. Concerns have been raised regarding the transfer of working conditions and the future of the current staff, highlighting the challenges and uncertainties ahead as Yle navigates this change in its operations.
