L. Bakouras (Thrace Mines): We are starting environmental monitoring for the investment in the mines of Perama Evros

Environmental monitoring for the Perama Evros mines is set to begin ahead of their operational launch anticipated in 2027.

The environmental monitoring system for the Perama Evros mines in Greece will commence immediately, ahead of the expected start of operations in 2027. Leonidas Bakouras, General Director of Thrace Mines, a subsidiary of Eldorado Gold, stated that before the investment launches, they will have recorded the quality of soil, water, air, seismic activity, flora, and fauna. A state-of-the-art digital monitoring system will operate 24/7, measuring air quality, surface and groundwater, biodiversity, vibrations, noise, and dust levels, with all data to be made publicly available on an open digital platform.

This project, costing $430 million, is projected to create 700 direct and indirect jobs that are stable and well-paid. In addition to job creation, the project is expected to generate around $400 million in state revenue. A portion of the mining fees will also be designated for the local government, contributing to the regional economy. This initiative highlights the emphasis on sustainable mining practices, which are intended to reassure the public and local stakeholders about the environmental implications of the mining activities.

The investment in the Evros region embodies a significant economic opportunity for local communities, potentially transforming the area's economic landscape. However, it also raises crucial questions regarding environmental protection and the long-term impact of mining activities, necessitating ongoing stakeholder engagement and transparent monitoring to mitigate any adverse effects on the environment and local population. As the project progresses, balancing economic benefits and environmental safeguards will undoubtedly be a critical focus for both the government and the company involved.
