Support for Health Check-ups for Delivery Workers... Implementation in Jeju, the First in the Nation

Jeju becomes the first region in South Korea to implement a program that supports health check-up costs for delivery workers, involving collaboration among delivery companies, local governments, and public hospitals.

Jeju Island is set to launch a groundbreaking program, making it the first region in South Korea to support health check-up costs for delivery workers. This initiative is aimed at improving the labor conditions of delivery workers who are often exposed to health risks such as overwork. Starting from August, the health check-up costs will be shared among four partiesβ€”40% by Jeju Province, 30% by delivery companies, 20% by Jeju Medical Center and Seogwipo Medical Center, and 10% by the workers themselves. With an approximate health check-up cost of 360,000 KRW, the workers will only be required to pay 36,000 KRW.

In addition to subsidizing health check-up costs, the program will provide a paid sick leave of 100,000 KRW on the day of the check-up. Delivery outlets will be allowed a day off for workers to undergo health check-ups, and Jeju Province will compensate for the wage loss incurred due to this unpaid leave. This essential program follows the tragic incident last November when a worker collapsed during early morning deliveries for Coupang, prompting discussions on the need for labor safety and health support for delivery personnel.

The program is temporarily aimed at approximately 1,100 special employment delivery workers contracted with delivery service outlets in Jeju. However, it's not yet confirmed if all will benefit from this program. Among six participating delivery companies, three have already agreed to the framework, while negotiations are ongoing with the remaining companies. Some companies have expressed hesitation, citing concerns over equity with other regions and increased cost burdens, but Jeju Province is determined to roll out the initiative with those who are willing to participate first.
