Will the math Matura be optional? "It causes stress and mental burden"
Psychologist Anna Drożdż has submitted a petition to the Polish parliament proposing that the mathematics Matura exam should not be mandatory due to its stress-inducing nature and its inadequacy in catering to the diverse talents and needs of Polish students.
Anna Drożdż, a psychologist, filed a petition to the lower house of the Polish parliament on January 9 of last year, raising concerns about the current educational system's requirement for every student to take a mathematics Matura exam. She argues that this system does not accommodate the varied needs, talents, and intellectual capabilities of young people in Poland. Drożdż believes that only Polish and a foreign language should be mandatory subjects for Matura; other subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, biology, history, and social studies should be elective based on students' preferences.
In her petition, Drożdż emphasizes that mandatory mathematics exams serve as tools for segregation and elimination rather than leveling the playing field for students. She highlights that among students, there are talented individuals in various fields such as humanities, ballet, art, tour guiding, and linguistics, as well as those suffering from learning disabilities like dyscalculia. The compulsory nature of the mathematics Matura puts excessive pressure on these students, potentially undermining their overall educational experience and mental well-being.
Drożdż's initiative reflects a growing debate in Poland about the relevance of standardized testing and the effectiveness of a one-size-fits-all approach in education. The potential reform could provoke discussions about educational inclusivity and the future direction of the Polish education system, especially concerning how it addresses the diverse abilities of its student population.
