Impact of War on the World Cup, Iran Refuses to Go to the US... Is Trump the Reason?

Iran's national football team has now decided to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026 but has made it clear that it will not play any matches in the United States due to increasing tensions between the two countries.

Amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Iran has made a significant reversal regarding its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Initially threatening to boycott the tournament, Iran's national football team, known as Team Melli, has confirmed its intention to play, although it will not be competing in any matches on U.S. soil. The head of Iranian football, Mehdi Taj, stated that the team is preparing for the tournament while opting to set up its training camp in Turkey, where they will also play two friendly matches.

The participation of the Iranian team in the World Cup came under scrutiny after escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran which have been heightened since late February. Previously, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Doonyamali hinted at a complete withdrawal from the World Cup following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, but this stance has shifted. Iran has now decided not to boycott the tournament; however, they insist on their terms and conditions, maintaining a firm stance regarding not playing in the U.S.

Consequently, Iran has formally requested FIFA to relocate their matches to another country rather than the United States. This demand stems from the geopolitical friction and historical animosities between Iran and the U.S., which continue to shape the discourse surrounding international sporting events. The implications of this situation not only affect Iran's football ambitions but also highlight the broader conflict dynamic and its impact on global sports administration.
