DWP Attendance Allowance update for older people making a new claim
The UK Department for Work and Pensions is updating its process for Attendance Allowance claims, aiming to expedite approvals for older applicants.
The UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced new measures to enhance the efficiency of processing Attendance Allowance claims for older individuals. Under the Service Modernisation programme, the DWP aims to process 90 percent of new claims within a 30-day timeframe, significantly reducing wait times for applicants. Pensions Minister Torsten Bell emphasized that this improvement is crucial for older people, especially those facing health challenges.
Currently, most Attendance Allowance claims are completed within three to four weeks, largely due to a rise in the usage of digital applications, which has made the process more accessible. The DWP is actively working to ensure that claimants, particularly those undergoing severe health treatments like chemotherapy, are prioritized and not adversely affected by waiting times. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to support older citizens efficiently.
Bell’s comments were in response to concerns raised by Labour MP Nadia Whittome regarding the implications of delays on vulnerable claimants. The DWP's proactive approach to improving processing times demonstrates an acknowledgment of the complexities faced by older adults in securing necessary financial support, especially during critical health issues. This update not only aims to enhance service delivery but also to alleviate distress for those in immediate need of assistance.
