"I am a public official of Suwon City"... Be cautious of impersonation, warning issued
Suwon City officials have warned citizens to be vigilant against impersonators posing as city officials who solicit personal information and money.
In recent weeks, Suwon City in South Korea has reported a surge in cases involving impersonators faking as city officials to extract personal information and money from unsuspecting citizens. Over the course of three weeks, eight separate incidents of fraud have been logged, reflecting the varying tactics and departments the impersonators have targeted, including civil service offices and libraries. In one instance, a fraudster posed as an official from the district office, attempting to connect a citizen to someone impersonating a police officer, ultimately trying to fish for sensitive personal data. Fortunately, a suspicious citizen contacted the city hall, thus averting potential financial loss. On the same day, another impersonator pretending to work for the park management department contacted a tile company to request service, following up with a fraudulent business card. The impersonation continued with a would-be official from the North Suwon Library soliciting work from a telecommunications company, and a suspect from the city’s safety construction department inquiring about electrical work under dubious terms. Suwon officials have clearly stated that city employees will never request money or personal banking details, thereby advising residents to verify any claims made by individuals purporting to be public officials. Last September, the city launched an awareness initiative by creating a manual to prevent fraud involving impersonation. They distributed this material to local businesses to educate them on recognizing scams. City officials reiterated that public servants do not operate using personal phones to request purchases or financial transactions, urging citizens to remain cautious and to report any suspicious calls or documents to local authorities to avoid becoming victims of such scams.
