University backs FG’s plan on admission autonomy
Topfaith University supports Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education's decision to grant universities the autonomy to select their admission candidates.
The Chairman of Topfaith University, Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, expressed strong support for the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Education's initiative to give universities the autonomy to determine their admissions process. This announcement by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasizes that universities will now have the authority to decide how to select candidates for various courses, improving their independence in managing admissions. Dr. Abraham stated that allowing universities to exercise admission autonomy is an important step towards enabling institutions to make critical decisions regarding their student bodies.
Dr. Abraham further elaborated on the significance of university autonomy, mentioning that it is a globally acknowledged principle reflecting an institution's ability to make important decisions tailored to its mission and circumstances. He indicated that what influences admission decisions can vary widely, including available resources, societal needs, institutional vision, and the current educational landscape. Such a move is expected to better align universities' admissions processes with their specific goals and the demands of their communities.
The implications of this decision may extend beyond academics, as universities will tailor their admissions to reflect social needs and workforce demands, potentially leading to a more relevant educational experience for students. This initiative could also address criticisms regarding admission processes and help to create more equitable opportunities for candidates across the country.
