Lagos seals fake real estate office, hunts impersonators

The Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority has shut down an office of a suspected impostor posing as a licensed realtor as part of a clampdown on unlicensed real estate agents in the state.

The Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) has taken decisive action against fraudulent activities in the real estate sector by sealing the office of an alleged impersonator in Ikorodu. This operation was conducted in collaboration with the State Task Force, highlighting the government's commitment to eradicating unlicensed real estate practices in the area. The impostor, identified as operating under the name Demeny Ventures, was reportedly using a fake registration number to mislead potential clients.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, explained that this clampdown aligns with the government's broader efforts to sanitize the real estate sector. The initiative aims to protect residents from fraudulent practices that can undermine the integrity of property transactions. By closing down offices operated by unlicensed agents, the state seeks to restore public confidence in the real estate market, ensuring that buyers and renters can seek housing and investment opportunities without the fear of deception.

This operation reflects a growing concern about the prevalence of scams within the real estate industry in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, where the market has been expanding. The government's active response signals a critical step towards better regulation and oversight, potentially leading to stricter enforcement measures against those operating outside the law. The impact of such actions may result in a more secure environment for real estate transactions, encouraging legitimate businesses to thrive while discouraging fraudulent operations.
