MP opens procedure to investigate the rise in fuel prices in RN

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio Grande do Norte has initiated a procedure to investigate potential abusive practices related to the recent hikes in gasoline and diesel prices in the state.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio Grande do Norte (MPRN) has launched an investigation into the recent increase in fuel prices, scrutinizing possible abusive practices among suppliers. Gas prices in the city of Natal have reportedly reached R$ 7.49 at some gas stations, which is nearly R$ 1 above the average price recorded by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) earlier in February. This substantial surge in prices has prompted the MPRN to take action to protect consumers and uphold fair market practices.

As part of the inquiry, the MPRN has requested documentation that outlines the application of import parity pricing on the crude oil sourced from the state. They are also looking into invoices to determine whether the price hikes are unjustified or if they are linked to old stock levels. In addition, the MPRN has reached out to consumer protection agencies in both Rio Grande do Norte and Natal, asking for detailed reports regarding recent price fluctuations. These agency responses are expected within 15 business days.

This investigation reflects growing concerns over market practices in the fuel sector and aims to safeguard consumers from potential price gouging. The Public Prosecutor's Office's proactive stance signifies an important legal review of fuel pricing mechanisms within the state, indicating that regulatory frameworks may need reassessment to ensure fair pricing and transparency in the industry.
