TCE files investigation into payment for unused ICU beds in Nova Mutum (MT) during the pandemic

The Mato Grosso State Court of Accounts (TCE-MT) has archived an investigation regarding a potential loss of R$ 7.2 million due to the payment for unused ICU beds in Nova Mutum during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In early March, the Mato Grosso State Court of Accounts (TCE-MT) decided to archive an investigation that looked into a possible financial loss of R$ 7.2 million connected to the payment for intensive care unit (ICU) beds that were never utilized in Nova Mutum during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inquiry, led by counselor José Carlos Novelli, revealed that the conduct of managers at the São Lucas Institute did not show any irregularities. Additionally, the report prepared will be sent to the Federal Court of Accounts for further evaluation.

The investigation was initiated based on findings from TCE's technical area, which discovered potential wasteful spending under an agreement between the municipal government and the São Lucas Institute for maintaining intensive care beds designated for COVID-19 patients. The preliminary report indicated that 3,644 daily charges were billed without actual use, hinting at significant financial implications for the municipality.

Despite the initial findings which suggested economic inefficiency and the potential misuse of funds, the TCE-MT concluded that there were no substantive violations in the management of the ICU beds. This decision not only closes the case locally but also opens the door for the Federal Court of Accounts to assess the situation from a broader perspective, which may have implications for future public health funding and oversight in Brazil.
