As the World Watches the War in Iran, China Tries to 'Bribe' Taiwan

China offered Taiwan energy stability in exchange for accepting Beijing's governance amidst the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

On Wednesday, China proposed to Taiwan that it would provide energy stability if the island accepted Beijing's governance, marking a significant move in China's ongoing campaign to persuade Taiwan to consider reunification, which the island has long rejected. This proposal comes at a time when the conflict in the Middle East intensifies and shipping routes through the critical Strait of Hormuz are disrupted, prompting governments worldwide to seek alternative energy supplies.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, explained to reporters in Beijing that a 'peaceful reunification' would enhance Taiwan's energy and resource security, adding that it would be supported by a 'strong motherland.' He emphasized that China is prepared to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply for the Taiwanese people, claiming that it would enable them to live better lives, particularly during the ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Reuters noted the underlying context of this proposal, implying that the offer of freedom comes at the price of guaranteed energy supply. However, Taiwan has shown hesitation in accepting such overtures from Beijing, suggesting that it remains cautious in the face of China's increasing assertiveness in the region.
