Making ammunition in Canada ‘essential’ for independence: defence minister

The Canadian government is investing $1.4 billion to enhance ammunition production to ensure national independence and readiness.

The Canadian federal government announced a significant investment of $1.4 billion aimed at bolstering the country's ammunition production capabilities. Defence Minister David McGuinty labeled this initiative as crucial for Canada's national independence, emphasizing the need for domestic production of defence equipment amid concerns about global supply chain vulnerabilities. This initiative is part of a broader Defence Industrial Strategy announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney, which seeks to fortify the domestic military supply chain.

As part of this program, IMT Precision is set to receive up to $306.4 million to establish a new facility dedicated to producing metal shells for 155-millimetre artillery projectiles. McGuinty highlighted that having the capacity to manufacture ammunition locally is not merely a preference but a necessity for protecting Canada’s military interests. The initiative is designed to remove reliance on foreign suppliers and create a more self-sufficient defence industry.

This investment not only aims to boost production capabilities but also seeks to ensure that the armed forces are provided with the necessary equipment as and when required. The government’s commitment to developing a robust Canadian defence industry reflects a growing recognition of the importance of self-reliance in the contemporary geopolitical landscape.
