FT: Russian oil shipments are heading to Cuba

Two tankers carrying Russian oil and fuel are en route to Cuba amidst the island's energy crisis.

The Financial Times reports that two tankers, sailing under flags of Hong Kong and Russia, are on their way to deliver much-needed Russian oil and fuel to Cuba, marking the first energy shipments to the island in three months. The Cuban government is currently struggling to restore electricity after the collapse of its aging power grid earlier in the week. This shipment is particularly significant as it arrives during a time of deep energy crisis for Cuba, with the country facing severe shortages and challenges in maintaining power supply.

According to maritime tracking data from TankerTrackers.com, the tanker Sea Horse, expected to arrive by early next week, is among those carrying crude oil from Russia. Another vessel, the Anatoli Kolodkin, is set to arrive on April 4 and carries about 100,000 tons of Urals oil. This information showcases the ongoing relationship between Cuba and Russia, particularly in the energy sector, as Cuba seeks to secure alternative sources of fuel amidst international sanctions and domestic infrastructural challenges.

The arrival of these shipments could stabilize energy supplies temporarily, but it also highlights Cuba's reliance on foreign oil and the complexities of its international relationships. Given the restrictions imposed by the previous US administration under Donald Trump, these shipments may reflect a strategic alliance with Russia, aimed at mitigating the effects of energy shortages on the Cuban populace, who have been suffering due to the power outages and fuel scarcity affecting daily life.
