Woman Tied to Bed in Hospital – Son Poured Water into Her Mouth
A man was convicted of assault after forcibly giving water to his mother, who was tied to a hospital bed and unable to swallow safely despite staff warnings.
A disturbing incident occurred in a Kangasala hospital in March 2023, where a 73-year-old woman was found to be tied to her bed due to her deteriorating physical health and lowered consciousness. Despite clear instructions from nursing staff prohibiting oral intake due to concerns about her swallowing ability, her son proceeded to pour water into her mouth, resulting in distress and coughing. The nursing staff first intervened when they noticed the son giving his mother water, emphasizing to him that she should not be given anything to drink.
This incident escalated after it was repeated two days later, with medical staff observing the woman choking when her son attempted to hydrate her again. Concerned for the woman's wellbeing, the staff consulted with a chief physician and ultimately decided to involve police authorities to address the situation, underscoring the serious nature of the son's actions. The enforcement of hospital protocols was a critical response to ensure the patient's safety, which had been compromised by her son's noncompliance.
The son's actions were deemed to constitute assault, leading to a court conviction, highlighting the conflict between a family member's intentions and medical guidance. This case raises important ethical and legal questions regarding patient rights and the responsibilities of family members in medical settings, especially in cases involving vulnerable individuals who cannot advocate for themselves.
