Tauron has billion-dollar plans for Silesia

Tauron plans a significant transformation and decarbonization of energy production in Silesia, starting with the Jaworzno power plant.

Tauron, the fastest among energy companies, is poised for deep decarbonization of electricity production, while still utilizing profitable coal power plants that ensure energy security. The key focus is on the Jaworzno III power plant, boasting a capacity of 910 MW. Other older coal plants, including Jaworzno, Trzebina, Będzin, and Łaziska, are set for transformation as part of Tauron's strategic shift toward cleaner energy production.

The transformation process is already underway, with Jaworzno taking the lead. A strategic project named OCGT Jaworzno 600 MW, which involves the establishment of a gas peak power plant, is slated to begin in 2025. This project achieved a significant milestone by securing a 15-year capacity contract following a successful bid in the 2030 Capacity Market auction held in December 2025. Additionally, the procurement process for the supply of turbines for this site was announced in early 2026, marking a critical stage in the preparation of this important energy infrastructure.

Tauron's plans are indicative of a broader trend in the energy sector in Poland, where there is an increasing emphasis on transitioning away from coal and toward more sustainable energy sources. The success of these initiatives could impact both local economies in Silesia and the national energy landscape, reinforcing the role of renewable sources and modern energy solutions in meeting climate goals and energy demands.
