Family tied up – robbed of cryptocurrency worth 2.5 million
A family in northern Uppland, Sweden, was violently robbed of cryptocurrency worth 2.5 million kronor by masked assailants who held them at gunpoint.
In a shocking incident in Tobo, a village in northern Uppland, Sweden, a family was held hostage by masked robbers demanding cryptocurrency during a violent home invasion. The robbery occurred on a Saturday evening in September, where the intruders broke into the family's home and threatened one of the residents with a pistol while similar events transpired in another house on the property involving other family members. The robbers were specifically after Bitcoin, but the family had different types of cryptocurrency worth 2.5 million kronor.
During the harrowing ordeal, family members were subjected to threats and mock executions, emphasizing the brutality of the robbery. Ultimately, the family members were coerced into transferring their cryptocurrency to the robbers. In an unexpected twist, one of the victims managed to activate their computer's microphone, allowing their father and brother to listen in on the events as they unfolded in real time, which later played a crucial role in the response to the situation.
When the brother and father responded to the scene, their arrival caused panic among the robbers, leading several of them to escape by jumping through windows or fleeing the premises. One of the victims mentioned how crucial the intervention of their family members was, stating, "Without my brother and father, I wouldn’t be alive right now." This incident raises concerns about the security of cryptocurrency ownership and the extreme lengths to which criminals will go to obtain digital assets.
