Spain announces €1 billion military aid package for Ukraine
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared a €1 billion military aid package for Ukraine during a press conference in Madrid.
On March 18, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a significant €1 billion military aid package for Ukraine, set to be delivered in 2026. This declaration was made during a press conference in Madrid alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasizing Spain's commitment to supporting Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion. Sánchez reiterated that Spain and its society stand firmly behind Ukraine's aspirations to become part of the European Union.
Sánchez specified that part of the military aid would be funded through the EU's SAFE instrument and aimed at fostering joint production initiatives with Ukraine's defense industries. This strategy is intended not only to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities but also to enhance cooperation between Spain and Ukraine in defense manufacturing. Additionally, some defense equipment is expected to be supplied directly by Spain's Ministry of Defence.
The announcement reflects Spain's ongoing support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and signals a commitment to long-term defense collaboration. As the war continues, such financial and logistical aid could play a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine's resilience, while also highlighting Spain's active role within the European community in supporting a prospective EU membership for Ukraine.
