X. Vafias: Three ships of the Group trapped in the Strait of Hormuz

Three ships belonging to the VAFIAS Group are currently trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, with concerns over their safe extraction amid ongoing instability in the region.

Three vessels of the VAFIAS Group are presently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, as disclosed by CEO Harris Vafias during his recent recognition as EY Entrepreneur of the Year Greece 2025. The situation remains precarious, with uncertainty about how the ships can be safely evacuated from the region. Vafias noted that the ongoing conflict will influence the shipping industry significantly, and the duration of this crisis will determine the scale of its repercussions on maritime operations.

Vafias emphasized that if the crisis persists for a shorter duration, around three to four months, the implications might be manageable. However, if it extends over a longer period, particularly beyond nine months, the consequences could be critical, largely arising from soaring fuel costs and the burdens they impose on ship operations. He highlighted the challenges associated with resupplying the stranded ships with essential resources such as fuel, water, and food, further complicating the situation.

The ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway for global oil transport, adds urgency to the matter, as such disruptions can have wider effects on global markets and energy supplies. Vafias's remarks underline not just the immediate risks to his ships but also the potential for broader economic consequences in the shipping sector, dependent on the conflict's evolution.
