The demand for porridge was surprising – children had crispbread for lunch

On Tuesday, three classes at Kriivarin School in Paimio went without lunch, which was supposed to be rice porridge, and had to settle for bread and crispbread instead.

On Tuesday, at Kriivarin School in Paimio, Finland, three classes were unable to have their planned lunch of rice porridge as the food supply ran out. Students in grades 4 to 6 were left without warm meals and instead received bread and crispbread, raising concerns among parents regarding the inadequacy of the school's meal service. The incident came to light when a parent learned from their child that they hadn’t been provided proper lunch until the afternoon when the child returned home.

A parent of one of the affected children expressed worries over the school's ability to ensure that students were properly fed during their school day. The lack of warm food prompted questions about the school's contingency plans to provide alternative meals or allow students to go home for lunch in such unforeseen circumstances. The situation has highlighted the importance of reliable meal planning and provision in schools, especially for the well-being of students.

Marjaana Elkiö, the regional manager of ISS Palvelut Oy, which handles the school's meal services, explained in an email that the demand for rice porridge exceeded expectations, leading to the shortfall. Elkiö noted that the amount delivered was based on prior knowledge and estimates of porridge consumption, which had not posed a problem in the past, indicating a need for better forecasting to prevent similar incidents in the future.
