Violence Among Minors: Increasing Incidents – The Core of the Problem

Greece's Minister of Citizens' Protection has highlighted a significant rise in violence among minors, linking it to a lack of supervision.

During an event at the Ministry of Digital Governance, Greek Minister of Citizens' Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in violence among minors. He noted statistics indicating a 44.74% increase in incidents from 2024 to 2025, revealing 1,520 cases in 2024 and 2,200 cases in 2025. The minister emphasized that most of these incidents involved not just violence but also concerning behaviors relating to the use of tobacco and alcohol among minors.

Chrisochoidis pointed out that the root of the problem lies in inadequate supervision of minors, particularly those who exhibit habitual delinquency. These alarming statistics underline the urgent need for increased parental and community involvement to address the risk factors contributing to this rise in juvenile violence. The minister called for a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue, indicating that efforts should include both preventive measures and more stringent regulations around the sale of tobacco and alcohol to young people.

As the issue escalates, there are pressing concerns regarding societal implications and the future behavioral patterns of these minors. Authorities are being urged to take action not just in terms of penalizing offenders but also in fostering positive development environments that can steer youth away from violence and substance abuse.
