Before the G7, Switzerland asks France to host the demonstrations

Switzerland has requested that France host demonstrations related to the upcoming G7 summit in order to avoid protests in Geneva.

Switzerland has reached out to France requesting that it host the demonstrations connected to the G7 summit scheduled for June in Evian. The request comes from authorities in Geneva, who are concerned about the potential for a counter-summit in their city. The city remembers the violent protests from the 2003 G8 summit held in nearby Evian, which has influenced current perceptions regarding public demonstrations.

Geneva's authorities have pointed out that a coalition of NGOs has already announced their intentions to protest in Geneva during the G7 summit set for June 15 to 17. Given the proximity of Evian to Geneva, tensions surrounding the potential for unrest are high, prompting Swiss officials to seek preemptive measures to avoid a repeat of historical violent incidents during such summits.

By suggesting that France take on the responsibility for hosting these protests, Swiss authorities aim to lessen the risk of disturbances in Geneva while still allowing for public expression related to international events. This request underscores the ongoing challenges that host countries face concerning large-scale international meetings, including management of civil society responses and ensuring public safety.
