Dengue combat teams will be able to enter public and private properties in Bahia; understand the measure
The Bahia government has authorized health teams to enter public and private properties deemed to pose an imminent risk to public health due to arboviral diseases.
On October 18, 2023, the Bahia government announced a new measure allowing health teams from the State Health Secretariat (Sesab) to enter both public and private properties where there is an imminent risk to public health, specifically due to arboviruses like dengue, zika, and chikungunya. This action is regulated by Ordinance No. 240, published in the State’s Official Gazette, emphasizing the state's proactive stance towards addressing public health challenges posed by these diseases.
The ordinance grants health officials permission to access abandoned properties, those without responsible ownership, or properties where access has been unjustifiably denied, provided there is confirmed evidence that these conditions endanger public health. The measure requires formal recording of incidents, prior notification via public announcements, and approval by the relevant health authority, ensuring that these operations are conducted within a structured and accountable framework.
The decision reflects the government’s commitment to tackling the surge of arboviral diseases, which have significant health impacts in Brazil. By enabling public health teams to take timely action in potentially hazardous situations, the measure aims to contain outbreaks and protect communities from the serious consequences of these infectious diseases.
