A new turn in the youth membership fee scandal โ police: No crime
The police investigation into the alleged security breach concerning Kokoomus youth membership fees concluded with no evidence of a crime committed.
The Helsinki police have completed their preliminary investigation regarding an alleged cybersecurity crime related to the membership fees of the Kokoomus youth organization. The investigation found that no criminal activity had occurred and therefore, no further inquiries will be pursued. This conclusion comes after Kokoomus discovered that an individual paid 191 membership fees to eight different Kokoomus youth associations towards the end of last year, raising concerns about the handling of membership payment data within the party's community.
The party alleged that the details concerning Kokoomus youth membership payments were shared unlawfully within the party without the knowledge of the affected parties. In light of these circumstances, Kokoomus filed a request for the police to investigate the matter. However, the police's preliminary findings indicated that the information shared included reference details related to the payments, and forwarding this information did not constitute a crime. No breach of registered privacy or other harm was identified in this case.
The Helsinki police clarified that their assessment focused solely on whether a crime had been committed, noting that no violations concerning privacy protection were found. This incident sheds light on the importance of data protection and the internal handling of sensitive information within political organizations, highlighting potential areas for improvement in safeguarding members' personal data.
