Ruling on Gauso's Torturers: After 12 Shovels Hits, the Dog Was Buried Alive Underground

Two individuals were found guilty of severely abusing a dog named Gauso, who survived being buried alive after being struck 12 times with a shovel.

A recent court ruling in Lithuania has highlighted severe animal cruelty as two individuals were convicted for torturing a dog named Gauso. The dog endured 12 brutal hits with a shovel and was buried alive, but miraculously survived. As a result of the attack, Gauso suffered extensive injuries including a fractured skull, necessitating complex surgery and a prolonged medication recovery period.

The court sentenced I. Ščerbinskienė to a conditional 60-day arrest and her accomplice to one year of freedom restriction, both required to participate in behavior correction programs and abstain from psychoactive substances during their sentences. Notably, they will avoid serving prison time unless they commit another crime within the next year. This ruling reflects a growing recognition of animal rights issues in Lithuania and a commitment to holding abusers accountable.

Additionally, both defendants were ordered to jointly compensate the animal welfare organization 'Nuaras' with €1,752 for Gauso's medical expenses. The case drew public attention, especially since the male perpetrator shared his cruel actions online, which could lead to further penalties, including fines. The involvement of the media and the responsiveness of the legal system signify a shift toward greater awareness and protection of animals in local legislation.
