A woman who accessed patient information unlawfully sued the welfare region, demanding 50,000 euros for unjustified dismissal
A former employee of the Varsinais-Suomen welfare region claims she was unjustly dismissed after unlawfully accessing patient information and is seeking over 50,000 euros in compensation.
A former ward secretary at TYKS in Finland has brought a lawsuit against the Varsinais-Suomen welfare region, alleging that her dismissal was unjustified following her illegal access of patient care information. She is demanding over 50,000 euros, equivalent to 21 months of salary, and the case was heard in the Varsinais-Suomen District Court. The woman had previously been convicted in 2025 of data protection violations for accessing the medical records of 72 patients without valid work-related reasons during 2020-2021.
Following her conviction, she was ordered to pay fines and compensation exceeding 20,000 euros, and her employment with the welfare region ended shortly after the court’s decision in February 2025. The current lawsuit revolves around the disagreements between the woman and her former employer regarding the circumstances and reasons for the termination of her contract, spotlighting the sensitive issue of patient privacy in healthcare.
The case highlights the legal and ethical dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals concerning patient confidentiality and the serious repercussions of violating data protection laws. As the trial unfolds, it draws attention to the need for strict adherence to privacy regulations in the healthcare sector and brings to light the potential consequences for employees who fail to comply.
