Has received power for data center in Mo i Rana

T1 Energy has been approved for a 50 megawatt capacity allocation for a data center in Mo i Rana, Norway, as they pivot from earlier plans regarding battery projects to capitalize on lower costs and plentiful resources in the region.

T1 Energy has recently announced that it has received a 50 megawatt capacity allocation for its data center in Mo i Rana, Norway, through Statnett, which manages Norwayโ€™s major power transmission lines. The company, formerly known as Freyr, had previously abandoned its battery project plans in Mo i Rana to focus on solar power initiatives in the USA, while attempting to sell its Nordic assets. Nevertheless, T1 Energy is still interested in increasing its capacity, as it remains in the queue with a request for an additional 346 megawatts for the Mo i Rana facility.

Daniel Barcelo, CEO and Chairman of T1 Energy, expressed optimism about developing their older Nordic assets into world-class data centers, leveraging the region's abundant resources and inexpensive labor combined with a strong industrial heritage. This shift signifies a strategic move for T1 Energy, aiming to maximize shareholder value by tapping into the high demand for power in Northern Norway, especially for tech-related developments.

The scenario in Northern Norway highlights a broader issue where numerous stakeholders are awaiting power supply, despite the region's adequate energy resources. Although there is a surplus of electricity available, the capacity constraints present challenges for various operations, indicating a potential growth phase for renewable energy and tech installations in the area, if these bottlenecks can be resolved.
