Sassou Nguesso elected president of Congo for a fifth term amidst opposition skepticism
Denis Sassou Nguesso has been declared the winner of the presidential elections in Congo, securing a fifth term with over 94% of the votes, despite significant opposition allegations of unfair electoral practices.
In the elections held in the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso has been announced as the winner for a fifth term, receiving over 94% of the votes according to preliminary results released by the Ministry of the Interior. The voter turnout was reported at around 84%, although observations from the capital, Brazzaville, indicated that polling stations were largely empty, with few voters in line. Analysts noted that the results were not surprising given that Sassou Nguesso, aged 82, was up against lesser-known opponents in a contest that many considered was fraught with issues.
