Vernissage in Unterföhring: Pictures of Sad Relevance
Zuheir Darwish's new exhibition, 'Time of Forgetting', features paintings that reflect themes of displacement, war, and fear, inspired by his own experiences as a stateless Kurdish refugee.
Zuheir Darwish’s exhibition titled 'Time of Forgetting' showcases artworks that resonate deeply with themes of displacement, war, and fear, reflecting the harsh realities faced by many today. As a stateless Kurd who fled from Syria to Europe in the 1990s, Darwish channels his personal experiences into his art, which aims to evoke empathy and awareness. The exhibition, opening on March 20 at the Bürgerhaus Unterföhring, represents both a personal narrative and a broader commentary on the issues surrounding refugees and their struggles.
In addition to portraying the pain of displacement, Darwish’s paintings also aim to convey messages of hope, often symbolized by images of a tree, representing resilience and growth in the face of adversity. This duality in his work not only provides a glimpse into his life but also offers a hopeful perspective amid the despair often associated with the refugee experience. The exhibition serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by many individuals forced to flee their homes.
As the founder of the 'Tree of Hope' association in Unterföhring, Darwish also integrates social work into his artistic practice. The proceeds from the sale of his paintings will support his charity, which focuses on helping children in refugee camps in the Middle East. By linking his art with humanitarian efforts, Darwish highlights the urgency of remembering and supporting those affected by conflict and displacement, emphasizing the importance of not allowing their stories to be forgotten.
