Hunting permitted for geese this spring
This year, hunting is allowed for greater white-fronted geese, white-fronted geese, and Canada geese in certain regions of Estonia for damage prevention purposes.
The Estonian Environmental Board has announced that hunting for specific geese species will be permitted this spring to mitigate potential damages. The regions allowed for hunting include Harju County, Lääne-Viru County, Ida-Viru County, Jõgeva County, Põlva County, and Tartu County. The decision was made following a directive issued on March 16 by the Environmental Board, underscoring the balance between wildlife management and agricultural interests.
A total of 500 greater white-fronted geese and 500 white-fronted geese will be allowed to be hunted this year, which reflects careful management of these populations. In contrast, the hunting of Canada geese will have no limits, indicating an overpopulation concern or a specific strategy to manage their numbers effectively in Estonian ecosystems.
This regulatory decision highlights the ongoing attempts by Estonian authorities to address wildlife management while ensuring ecological balance. By allowing limited hunting, the government is engaging local hunters to participate in conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaborative approaches toward environmental stewardship.
