Private Broadcasting Key Stations Withdraw from BS4K and Will Distribute 4K Programs on WOWOW On-Demand
Japan's private broadcasting key stations will transition from BS4K broadcasting to distributing 4K programs on WOWOW's On-Demand service this fall.
Japanese private broadcasting key stations, including BS Nippon Television, BS Asahi, BS-TBS, BS TV Tokyo, and BS Fuji, are planning to withdraw from BS4K broadcasting. They have decided to leverage WOWOW's streaming service to distribute 4K content, marking a significant strategic shift as they prepare for the potential cessation of BS4K broadcasts. This change comes after the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications expressed the importance of continuing 4K content production and distribution. The participating companies intend to announce these plans on the 19th and aim to finalize their withdrawal from BS4K by the broadcast license renewal in January next year. The transition to streaming is seen as a proactive step in adapting to the changing media landscape dominated by digital content consumption. Starting this autumn, audiences will be able to watch previously aired 4K programs on WOWOW On-Demand for free, as long as they have internet-connected 4K compatible televisions. This move not only highlights a shift in content delivery but also indicates how traditional broadcasters are facing competitive pressures in adapting to modern viewing habits, leading to a significant transformation in Japan's broadcasting industry.
