Chinese military set for EU and Nato talks as Iran war reshapes global security picture

A Chinese military delegation is set to meet with EU and NATO officials next week to discuss global security issues, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in Iran.

A delegation from China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is scheduled to visit Brussels next week for significant discussions with European Union and NATO representatives amid increasing global security concerns stemming from the escalating conflict in Iran. This meeting has raised eyebrows as the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine complicates relations between China and Western powers, serving as a major barrier to fruitful dialogue between NATO and Beijing.

The official EU-China Security and Defence Consultations are set for next Tuesday, with the discussions being chaired by Benedikta von Seherr-Thoss, the managing director for peace, security and defence within the EU’s External Action Service. The scheduled talks with NATO will also include a meeting between the PLA’s Office for International Military Cooperation and NATO’s international military staff, marking an important step in military diplomacy amid complex geopolitical tensions.

These upcoming talks highlight a pivot in global security dynamics, influenced by the Iran conflict and the ongoing challenges presented by the Ukraine war. The Chinese delegation's engagement with both NATO and the EU reflects an acknowledgment of these shifting security landscapes and the necessity for dialogue on pressing issues, despite existing tensions and differing priorities between China and these Western military alliances.
