20-year-old comet selected as the best player in SM-liiga
Benjamin Rautiainen of Tappara has been awarded the Lasse Oksanen trophy for being the best player in the SM-liiga regular season.
Tappara's Benjamin Rautiainen has won the prestigious Lasse Oksanen trophy, an award that recognizes the best player in the SM-liiga regular season as determined by a vote among ice hockey journalists. At just 20 years old, Rautiainen becomes the second youngest recipient of the award since its inception in 1994, following Saku Koivu, who won it in 1995. Rautiainen's remarkable performance this season has placed him in elite company among young hockey talents in Finland.
With an outstanding tally of 77 points from 59 games, scoring 25 goals and providing 52 assists, Rautiainen not only took home the Oksanen trophy but also secured the top position in the points and assists standings for the regular season. His exceptional skills on the ice earned him recognition from fellow players as well, who previously voted him as the best player of the regular season, resulting in him receiving the Golden Helmet award.
In the voting conducted by 92 ice hockey journalists, Rautiainen received 55 first-place votes, illustrating the high regard in which he is held within the hockey community. His teammate, Joachim Blichfeld, who finished third, garnered 7 first-place votes, while SaiPa's Maxime Fortier secured the second position with 13 first-place votes. Rautiainen’s accomplishments this season not only highlight his personal talent but also signify the upcoming generation of Finnish talent making waves in professional ice hockey.
