Burglars Struck a Daycare Center in Turku - Sensitive Information at Risk

Burglars have broken into a closed daycare center in Turku, compromising sensitive personal information of children and adults.

A burglary occurred at the disused Kaerla daycare facility in Turku, Finland, between March 6 and March 11, as reported by the city of Turku. The burglars gained access to archived materials that contained sensitive personal information of both children and adults. This included confidential health information, early childhood education plans, and employment contracts, raising concerns about data security and privacy. The documents involved were reportedly over 12 years old and were awaiting transfer to the city's archives.

Turku’s early childhood services area director, Vesa Kulmala, stated that the potential data security breach could affect several dozens of clients and employees. Although there is currently no evidence to suggest that the stolen data has been viewed or used improperly, the incident raises serious concerns regarding the protection of personal data, particularly in a sector dealing with vulnerable populations like children.

Authorities have subsequently filed a police report, and a criminal investigation has been launched. The city has also made a report to the data protection authorities, indicating the seriousness with which they are treating the issue. This incident highlights the importance of safeguarding sensitive information, especially within public institutions tasked with oversight of children’s welfare.
