Six-pack changes in EU ETS. There is a Polish position

Poland's climate minister has outlined the country's stance on potential reforms to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) ahead of an upcoming European Council meeting.

Ahead of the European Council meeting on March 19-20, EU member state leaders will discuss improving the competitiveness of the Polish economy, focusing on energy prices and changes to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). A revision of the ETS is scheduled for July, when the European Commission will present proposals for changes. The ongoing discussions on this topic have reached a critical phase after a year of deliberations.

Poland's updated position on the ETS revision was presented by Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska, who emphasized that while one cannot unilaterally exit the ETS, it is essential to implement changes. She highlighted the need for the system to provide incentives and resources for transitioning away from imported fuels in a manner that is acceptable for both the economy and households, indicating a collaborative effort with other member states.

During a related conference, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk mentioned that the government would invest around one trillion złoty in the transformation of Poland's energy sector, showcasing a commitment to a sustainable energy future. This substantial investment, along with the upcoming discussions on the ETS, signals a significant shift in Poland's approach to energy and climate policies as the country looks to balance economic growth with environmental responsibilities.
