Guard who drowned while saving a woman who jumped into the river is mourned in Campo Bom

A 39-year-old municipal guard drowned while rescuing a woman who jumped into the Rio dos Sinos and is being honored in Campo Bom, Brazil.

Carlos Daniel dos Santos Ferreira, a 39-year-old municipal guard, tragically drowned while attempting to save a woman who had jumped into the Rio dos Sinos in Campo Bom, in the Metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. His body is being mourned at the City Hall, with a farewell ceremony scheduled to take place in the afternoon before he is laid to rest in the local cemetery. Ferreira had been serving in the municipal guard since 2022.

The incident occurred when Ferreira and his team were responding to a report of suspected drug trafficking. In an attempt to evade the authorities, the suspect jumped into the water. Ferreira bravely entered the river and successfully rescued the woman, bringing her to safety. Unfortunately, after the rescue, he submerged and failed to resurface, prompting the immediate arrival of the Emergency Medical Service to assist.

This tragic event highlights the risks that first responders face in the line of duty, as Ferreira's selfless act cost him his life. He leaves behind a mother, wife, and two children, raising questions about the support systems for families of public safety workers and the need for improved safety protocols in emergency response situations.
